Situated in the picturesque location of Cressbrook, within the Peak District National Park, the house takes advantage of the natural landscape and resources from the former quarry.
Conceived as a single storey house the architecture integrates with its surrounding, sitting on the flat bed below the backdrop of the rocky face of the quarry. The green roof, planted with native species, both increases the biodiversity of the site whilst providing a visual continuation of the fields beyond to the landscape below.
The house is oriented to maximise stunning views across the valley towards the Monsal Dale with a sheltered courtyard to the rear, enclosed by the stone face of the quarry. A gloriette accommodates a first floor living space acting as a viewing gallery to enjoy the panorama.
Facing materials reference the local context with a reconstituted stone colonnade, local stone bricks used for the external walls, and a grey/blue anodised metal cladding to the gloriette reflecting the tone of the blue slate tiles of the area. Additionally stone excavated from the site has been used to build the rubble walls and add to the harmonious relationship between the building and the landscape.
The building is very well insulated, designed with a fabric first approach ensuring a high-performance envelope with excellent levels of thermal efficiency. To provide good air quality an MVHR system is installed to supply mechanical ventilation and heat recovery to the airtight home.
