As part of a terrace of four two-storey houses the property consisted of two bedrooms, a family bathroom, a sitting room and kitchen, with all access via an entrance hall.  The owner sought to add accommodation to the rear to home, extending the living space, along with providing a first-floor study space to facilitate working from home.

To ensure the amenity enjoyed by the neighbours was not interrupted the extension has a stepped back first floor element, both reducing the overall impact on the neighbouring property, but also achieved a relief to the massing.

Enhancing the accommodation through additional floor space with increased openings hugely improved the transition from inside to outdoors, providing greater connectivity to the garden, flooding the interiors with light, whilst reaching out to enjoy long views to Winchester Cathedral.

Beyond the practical benefits, the extension brings a real sense of wellbeing, and the enjoyment of an environment reconfigured for modern living.  As well as creating larger spaces, and additional rooms, the extension was an opportunity to greatly improve the thermal efficiency of the home. A fabric first approach to the design went beyond building regulation requirements and will reduce the future energy consumption.  This included the installation of triple glazed windows and doors, and high levels of thermal insulation.

The materially of the scheme takes a low embodied carbon approach, re-using existing slates and bricks from the removed façade, and using a timber frame construction and cladding.  The light weathered timber cladding was specified to complement, and not compete with the brickwork of the residential terraces. The Scots Pine cladding is PEFC certified from well managed forests and thermally modified, with increased stability and durability to reduce the maintenance requirement and prolong its lifespan.  The use of a natural slate for the pitched roof form ties the extension into the terrace and it's context.
